Deangelo Henderson Profile

When you're assaulting defenses the way 2011 Summerville RB Deangelo Henderson has been doing throughout his career its hard to fathom this youngster has not earned his first college scholarship offer yet. This past Friday despite a heartwrenching triple overtime 64-57 loss to Goose Creek Henderson proved why he's one of the state's top prospects in 2011.

Friday night saw Henderson showcase his talents once again to the tune of 286 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns in the loss. His efforts didn't go unnoticed either as Goose Creek head coach Chuck Reedy had this to say about Henderson after the game, "I said it once and still think that Henderson is the best running back in the state, and (Virgil) Smalls is the best fullback in the state."

That kind of praise is what college coaches should take note of. Henderson's thought process is pretty straight forward each time out. To go to work and produce at the highest level possible for his team. He gave plenty of love to his teammates first when we asked him about his explosive start this year. Through 3 games Henderson has scored 11 touchdowns and has posted more than 800 yards of offense from scrimmage for coach John McKissick's Green Wave squad.

"Just as long as my offensive line continues to open holes for me and my receivers and other backs block like they've been doing then I'm sure I can continue to keep having good games."

His outlook for the rest of the season for the Green Wave was this, "My goal for the team is for us to work together and win the state championship. My personal goals are to be the leader the team needs on and off the field, and to rush for 2,000 yards."

Opponents have had a hard time getting ahold of Henderson as his production has been off the charts early on. The 2011 prospect talked about his strengths which has helped him throughout his career.

"I think my biggest aspect is having good footwork and power because that allows me to break tackles." Henderson also said that he's not satisified with all aspects of his game right now and what areas he's still working hard to shore up. "I want to improve on my pass blocking. I think if I can do that then I will be a complete back."

Some coaches may be cool on Henderson because he's not a huge back but in today's game with guys like Maurice Jones-Drew, Noel Devine, and others are having such great success on the higher levels college coaches are rethinking their thoughts on guys under six feet tall.

One back in particular from years past really inspired Henderson. "One of my favorite running backs of all time is Warrick Dunn. So I grew up a FSU fan and always dreamed of being just like Warrick Dunn and playing for FSU."

In terms of recruiting though there are some schools that are regularly in touch with Henderson currently he says. "I'm currently hearing from Georgia Tech, Clemson, USC, Kentucky, NC State, and The Citadel. I don't have any offers and I think The Citadel and maybe Georgia Tech are close to offering me possibly."

So far Henderson has only visited on school, South Carolina. He says he enjoyed his visit and that it was a nice school from his time spent there. There remains a few schools out there that he'd like to hear more from and he also divulged his early favorites at this point.

"I would love to hear more from schools like Florida State, Wake Forest, and Georgia soon. Right now South Carolina, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Georgia, FSU, and Kentucky are my favorites."

Given that Henderson has posted over 800+ yards from scrimmage and scored 11 touchdowns through the first 3 games of the season college coaches should take an extra long hard look at the standout from Summerville High School. Many folks here in South Carolina including the SCPrepNation.com staff realize that he's indeed a star in the making that has flown under the radar far too long.

Henderson doesn't expect an early decision though. His plans right now are to wait until after the season and discuss things thoroughly with his family before making a decision for college.
