Dezmon Venning Profile
With a great blend of size, speed, and power 2012 Wando High RB Dezmon Venning should start to see more interest his way in the near future. The Low Country standout lined up a great deal at fullback for the Warriors the past two seasons but he's got the tools in our opinion to be a feature running back on the college level. We caught up with Venning recently for a quick update regarding his recruitment and outlook for the future heading into his senior season.
While at the Badger Sport South Showcase Combine in Bamberg a few weekends ago Venning didn't say much at all except to his position coaches and introduced himself to me for a brief moment. The rest of the event Venning tested extremely well and let the results do all of the talking.
Venning's Testing Results from Bamberg:
Weight: 194 pounds
40 Yard Dash: 4.5 seconds
Shuttle: 4.3 seconds
Broad jump: 8'11"
Benched 185 lbs: 21 repetitions
Venning had the look of a college back from a physical standpoint. I overheard others at the event talking about how ripped he was and wondering if the Wando prospect already held offers. The answer to the latter being, "not yet". That's something Venning is hoping to change soon and he took a huge step by being one of the most impressive backs at the Badger Sport South Showcase.
"When I came to the Badger Sport South Showcase the only thing I was thinking was to show out and be the best out there. Competing against the other prospects was great, but I went into it like it was a job interview and I needed the job badly!" Venning said.
"During the off season I've been hitting the bags and dummies to become a better blocker. I've also been doing a lot of agility work to get quicker."
Venning talked about his strengths as a running back with us.
"The biggest strengths I have right now are my vision to see the holes and how hard I hit them."
This past season as a junior playing mostly at fullback he piled up 640 yards on 60 rushes and scored 7 touchdowns. For his work he was named Player Of The Week a couple of times this past season. Looking ahead to his senior season Venning has a few goals in mind.
"Well during my senior season my goals are to get over 1,000 yards, score a few more touchdowns, and most of all have a ton of pancake blocks.!"
Already a number of schools are showing interest in Venning and he talked about where things stand currently about his recruitment.
"I'm hearing a lot from South Carolina, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Clemson, MSU, Kentucky, and Georgia."
"The two schools that are recruiting me the hardest are North Carolina and South Carolina."
The 5'9 194 pound prospect has already seen a few campuses and he talked about one school that really stood out to him.
"I've been on a few visits. I've been to North Carolina, South Carolina, Clemson, and North Carolina State. Out of those schools I enjoyed North Carolina the most."
Other schools that Venning says he'd like to hear more from in the near future are Miami, Connecticut, Pittsburgh, LSU, and Georgia Tech.
Venning also talked about what it is that he's going to consider the heaviest when choosing a college.
"The important factors I'm looking for in a school are the education and the graduation rate. Those are what I look for the most before any of the other things because I know that football won't last forever."
INSIDE THE NUMBERS...DEZMON VENNING

Kerry's Take: As stated before Venning is a physical specimen at running back. He showed nice hands catching out of the backfield and very quick feet during drills. Playing fullback has given him a toughness that I like in a back and I feel it has helped prepare him for the college level as he has taken on defensive linemen and linebackers in the hole. Speed has increased tremendously over the past two seasons. Has tremendous character and a pleasant outgoing personality which college coaches will love. Outstanding all-around prospect who has the tools to be a nice pick up for a program looking for a tough back who does very well at the entire gamut of what is required of a good running back.
