He may not be the big bruising power back that many are accustomed to seeing but what sets 2012 Abbeville running back Ashton Heard apart from the rest is his heart. The 5'8 170 pound prospect has been to multiple camps so far and has some more to attend in the near future. We caught up with Heard to talk about it all recently.
"I've been to camp at The Citadel, Furman, Wofford, South Carolina, and I'm going to Coastal and Charleston Southern."
One of his camps stops provided plenty of positive feedback and he shared with us what the staff had to say about him.
"The coaches loved me at USC. They (offensive line coach Shawn Elliot and running backs coach Jay Graham) said the only reason I'm probably not getting offers is because of my size. They said they had seen from my highlights and how I performed during the one-on-ones that I've got heart and that USC is where I need to be. They said they were really impressed with me."
Other schools like South Carolina State have informed Heard that he's at the top of their board but he's yet to grab that elusive first offer. Still the feedback from the staff at USC provided him with more motivation to continue to prove any doubters wrong. After rushing for over 1,800 yards and 27 touchdowns in helping Abbeville win a state championship last year we're surprised more schools haven't been involved with him at this point.
Heard may not be the biggest back out there but he's one of the strongest you'll find pound for pound at 170 pounds. With maximums of 345 pounds on the bench press, a 405 pound squat, a 265 pound power clean, and a 535 pound deadlift in the weight room it's easy to see why Heard has been so dynamic and explosive during his career.
