Virgil Smalls Profile

The Goose Creek Gators rushing attack will be live and wide open again this coming season. The Gators have a two headed monster in the backfield with the likes of 2012 FB Virgil Smalls and 2014 RB Caleb Kinlaw. Smalls at 6'0 250 pounds had a huge junior season and has numerous schools recruiting him heavily right now. We caught up with the bruising fullback for the very latest.

This off season has been relatively quiet for Smalls as he's only made a couple of visits he says.

"I've just gone to one day camps at South Carolina and Georgia Tech. I was planning on going to Georgia's Dawg Night but I just couldn't make it out there."

The 2012 prospect says a number of schools remain in the mix currently regarding his recruitment too.

"I'm hearing from South Carolina, Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Alabama."

Smalls also told us he already holds offers from North Carolina A&T and Morgan State. He's confident he will earn offers from the other schools mentioned previously too. Considering his numbers from last season if he can replicate or improve on them that very well may be the case.

"Last year I had 1300+ yards rushing, 200+ yards receiving, and 25 touchdowns. I also had 84 or 86 crunch blocks. That's like pancaking a linebacker."

The fullback prospect when asked if he had an early top 5 list couldn't produce one immediately but he did give us some schools that he's confident will be there when the time comes.

"No I don't really have one right now but I know that Georgia, South Carolina, and LSU are going to be on it."

The in-state Gamecocks also have a family member on the squad already in 2011 OL Brandon Shell and Smalls talked about it with us.

"I mean I would like to play with him but I don't want people to say I'm a follower. He's been cool about not really recruiting me. He's going to let me make my own decision."

Smalls says that he currently doesn't have a timetable set as to when he may make a decision.

"To be honest I'm going to wait until after my official visits because I want to get a chance to see what all the schools have to offer before I make a choice."

Smalls says a number of factors will play crucial factors in making that decision.

"Just the education first, the team's style of play, how good of a training staff they have to keep you healthy, a good nutrionist, and a school that I feel most comfortable at."

With it being his senior season Smalls is looking to step it up during his final campaign with his Gator teammates. Looking ahead he's got his sights set on quite a few things he says.

"I'm looking forward to playing the University team from Florida because with they passing that they do our defense can get more used to it when we play teams from the Upstate in the playoffs. Just to see how we match up when we play them. I'm also looking forward to playing Summerville because that game still controls who is on top in the Lowcountry and I want to win that game to keep us on top where we belong."
