Orangeburg-Wilkinson linebacker Stedman Lucas has it all in spades. Size. Check. Speed. Check. Bloodlines. Check. Stats. Check. The 2013 prospect is just starting to generate a buzz for himself with a couple of schools and his junior film set to be sent off to various schools around the country. One look and it's easy to see he'll be a high major target before too long, that's why he's "UP NEXT" with SCPrepNation.com.
If the Lucas name mentioned with Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School rings a bell you aren't mistaken. Stedman's older brother, Sterling Lucas, also starred at OWHS before catching fire at the Shrine Bowl practices and game a few years ago. Lucas landed multiple offers late and chose North Carolina State where he's currently a senior starter at linebacker. Baby brother is hoping to forego the last second push in the recruiting game by getting his name out there now for all to see.
"This past season I had 73 tackles and 4 sacks," Lucas said.
It was against one of O-W's big rivals that he says he had his shining moment of the season.
"My best game of the season was against Bamberg-Ehrhardt. I had 16 tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble. It was memorable because they are a big rival of ours at Orangeburg-Wilkinson."
Lucas saw action against a lot of quality opponents last season but one player in particular stood out to him as the toughest he's faced.
"The toughest player I have faced so far would probably have to be Shaq Roland from Lexington. He's a pretty good player and very elusive."
Lucas talked about his strengths and areas where he wants to improve this off season with us.
"As of now I would say my biggest strengths as a linebacker would be my size, speed, and overall athleticism at the position. My speed, strength, and key reading are the main aspects I'm working on to improve. I am just working very hard to become the best linebacker in the country."
The 6'3 225 pound prospect patterns his game after two of the best in the NFL too.
As we mentioned before Lucas is just starting to feel some love from a couple of schools but upon completion of his junior highlight film he'll be sending it out to schools all over. An in-state program apparently is chasing him the hardest too.
"Right now I'm hearing from Clemson, NC State, Purdue, East Carolina, and UCLA. I would say Clemson is showing the most interest at this point but I am in the process of sending some film out so I feel recruiting will pick up in a major way very soon."
Thus far Stedman has only visited one school but he plans on camping with a number of schools this summer.
"NC State is the only school I visited so far because Sterling plays for them. So I have been there several times. I plan on camping with and visiting Clemson, Miami, NC State, Wake Forest, and Georgia this off season."
With another season to go and a brother already playing big time college football the 2013 prospect has an inside track or feel so to say regarding the college game and what all it entails. He told us what he'll be examining closely when making his decision for college.
"A good education, great coaches, campus comfort, and early playing time will all play a key role for me in choosing a school."
Lucas says that he's an A-B Honor Roll student in the classroom.
We'll have his junior season highlights soon for you to see so stay tuned as we'll have plenty more updates with Lucas as we expect schools to start showering him with attention once that film rolls.
