Blessed with good size for a cornerback at 5'10 175 pounds Darius Jones of Woodruff High School hit the road this past weekend and camped with Virginia Tech. Knowing that many top prospects would be in attendance Jones put on a show to cement his status as a player to watch very closely moving forward.
The Hokies staff saw him in person and soon other programs will want to get a closer look at Jones after some impressive numbers in Blacksburg.
"Yeah I went to Virginia Tech with a mindset that I would make them remember me so I tried my hardest posting a 41 inch vertical and a 4.34 second 40 yard dash."
The Hokies made an impression on Jones as well though he says.
"I like Virginia Tech a lot! They are like defensive back U because they always have a great secondary. I spoke with coach Foster and he just told me that he wanted to see my film and with the numbers I posted that I opened some eyes."
Currently Jones has a long list of schools showing interest but it's safe to say that after word spreads about his exploits in Blacksburg that more schools will start chasing him as well.
"Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, and Western Carolina are coming at me the hardest right now."
Asked if he felt like he's close to getting some offers from particular schools Jones replied, "I feel Appalchian State, Georgia Southern, Gardner-Webb, South Carolina State are close to offering. And now also Virginia Tech after this weekend."
Looking ahead to his senior season Jones talked about his personal and team goals. The Wolverines came up short in the state championship game a season ago.
"My goals are to get faster, becoming a better tackler, and get 10 interceptions. As for team goals it's to win a state title and do my best to help make my teammates better."
The 2013 prospect talked about what he'll be taking a close look at when choosing his college destination.
"I want major in sports medicine and health. The most important factor is going to be the defense. Most people don't understand that the defensive line is the most important part on defense. So I feel the team with the best front seven will be my choice. The quicker they get to quarterback the job gets easier for me."
A testament to his blazing speed that he showcased in Blacksburg this past weekend Jones also shines on the track where he had a successful season there as well.
"My best times in track this season were 10.6 seconds in 100 meters, 22.3 seconds in the 200 meters, and 22 feet in the long jump."
