Timberland High School defensive back, Austin McKinney, has been hitting up the combine circuit hard and heavy this spring/summer. Needles to say, it’s been all business for the 6-0, 170 pound DB, and he has the numbers to prove it.
Back in the month of March, McKinney received an invitation to participate in the VTO Showcase. Although he went into the event relatively unknown, the Low Country native was determined to make a name for himself. Well needless to say, McKinney’s mission was accomplished. The 2013 prospect recorded the fastest forty- time with a 4.48 in the 40-yard dash, a 33-inch vertical, 14 reps of 185 pounds, and was recognized as one of the “Top Sleepers” at the event.
Not bad for someone who’s never competed on a stage like that before… But it was only the beginning of things for McKinney… In May, he took his skills to the Shrine Bowl Combine (Cane Bay HS), where he amazingly clocked a 4.31 in the 40-yard dash. Not to mention, a 4.28 shuttle, a 10.3 broad jump, and 14 reps 185 pounds.
But it didn’t end there… Just last week McKinney took a trip up north, to compete in a combine in the state of Ohio. Needles to say, the South Carolina native represented his state in grand fashion, recording a 4.38 in the 40-yard dash, a 30-inch vertical, a 10.3 in the broad jump, and a 4.3 shuttle.
Surprisingly, The Timberland star doesn’t have any scholarship offers on the table. But it’s only a matter of time before recruiters start heavily pursuing the highly talented athlete out of St. Stephen, South Carolina, who in my opinion is one of the state’s best kept secrets…
We will keep you posted!
Note: Early on, McKinney has been receiving attention from Clemson, South Carolina, Arizona, UNC, App State, Charleston Southern, Youngstown State, Coastal Carolina, Navy, and SC State to name a few.
