Clemson tight end commitment Cannon Smith picked up an offer from Alabama last month. He talks about…
Venables sees Smith
Among the guys he saw was Cannon Smith, the 2014 tight end commitment from The Hammond School.
"He was in town looking at other players down here. He came by to say hello. He kind of surprised me at lunch," Smith told CUTigers.
The two spoke after Venables' stop in Columbia.
"He just asked me how the season was going, talked a little bit about Clemson. That was the only coach that came down here."
Since his commitment over the summer, Smith's received letters from other schools. But the three-star prospect remains firm with his pledge to the Tigers.
"I'm not going to go anywhere else," he said.
Rated by Scout.com as the No. 8 tight end in the country, Smith is excited about being a part of the Clemson offense.
"Clemson's got a dynamic offense. I love their style," he said. "The just don't pick one player. They kind of share the ball around to everybody. We're really skilled. I believe that we're going to be explosive on offense next year."
Smith hasn't spoken with any of the Clemson coaches about the future of offensive coordinator Chad Morris, who's been courted schools like N.C. State to become the next head coach.
"Every time I talk to the coaches, they haven't really talked about stuff like that. They just ask me about how I'm doing. I don't really know much about that situation," Smith said.
As for Smith, he had a solid junior season.
"We had a good year. We lost in the state championship, but those things happen," he said. "We only lost two games this season, including the state championship. We had another incredible season, like we always had."
Smith finished with over 500 yards receiving and five touchdown catches.
As a sophomore, Smith had 20 catches for 387 yards and four touchdowns.
