It's a year later and Armanti Edwards is doing the same things he did for the Mountaineers that he did for the Eagles last year. He's beating teams with both his arm and his legs. In the first round of the NCAA Division 1-AA playoffs he guided the Mountaineers to a 45-28 victory over Coastal Carolina. Not only did they come out with a win but Edwards put on a show as he passed for 3 touchdowns and ran for 2 more on the ground.
After the smoke cleared his stats on the day were 14/28 for 226 yards passing and three touchdowns. On the ground Edwards ran 19 times for 172 yards and two touchdowns. The 172 yards rushing would become a school rushing record by a quarterback. Edwards had help on the ground in running back Kevin Richardson who notched 156 yards on 25 carries.
Earlier in the week Armanti was named the Southern Conference's Freshman of The Year. During the season he won the Freshman of the Week award five times which tied the most ever by a single player in a season for the Southern Conference. His production not only won him Freshman of the Year but he was also named to the First Team All Conference squad as well. Having passed for 1636 yards and 11 touchdowns and rushing for 685 yards and 9 touchdowns on the ground.
Next week Appalachian State will host Montana State in the quarterfinals. Montana State ousted Furman who is guided by another former Greenwood High quarterback Renaldo Gray 31-13 in the first round.
