Early Leader For South Pointe's Devin Wherry?
The class of 2009 looks quite fruitful in the Palmetto State. South Pointe High School has two of the top prospects in the class with RB Devin Wherry and S/QB Stephon Gilmore. We caught up with both players recently and interviewed them both. Both have gotten off to a fast start this season for the Stallions of South Pointe High and that has lead to a 2-0 record so far. One look at Devin Wherry and you marvel at how large this young man is for a high school running back. Wherry has tremendous size at 6'0 215 pounds. Add his 4.6 speed in the 40 to the mix and it's a deadly combination for opposing defenses. Wherry however still sees areas that he wants to improve on. "I want to improve my agility, footwork, and speed. It'd be really good if I were able to drop my 40 time even more." In fact this past offseason a great deal of his training went towards some of the those aspects of his game. "I really hit the weight room lifting weights and worked on my speed a lot this past summer." We told Wherry that he projects to be one of the state's top RB prospects in the 2009 class and he told us how it made him feel. "It feels good but it also motivates me a lot too. To get better and stay on top." Another motivation for Wherry and his South Pointe teammates is to move towards a state championship. After his team aspirations Wherry talked about a personal goal he's working towards. "One of my goals is to be the best back in the state." So far this season Wherry has been quite productive. "I had 30 carries for 107 yards in my first game and then 20 carries for 175 yards and 3 touchdowns last week." Wherry has an idea of what he's looking for in a college as well. "I'm looking for academics and some early playing time but academics come first to me." One school has been consistent in their pursuit of Wherry. In fact he just took an unofficial visit to their campus on Labor Day. "Yeah I went to the Florida State-Clemson game for a visit." Wherry says the Tigers call him a lot and so far they are the primary school who's been recruiting him. That should change in the near future as word continues to leak out about his prowess and size on the gridiron. Wherry has a few players that he likes to watch and learn some moves from as well. "I like to watch Reggie Bush, Adrian Peterson, and Ladanian Tomlinson." Devin says he will be taking the SAT for the first time next month.
