The Byrnes-Gaffney game is always one of the biggest not only in the state but the southeast region. Both teams are proud and storied programs. This matchup has become one of the biggest rivalries in the past decade and SCPrepNation.com brings you a recap from the game since the rains kept our cameras locked away. Guys like 2010 Byrnes WR Nick Jones helped their stock in a big way.

Well the rain poured and poured at the new Reservation in Gaffney. That kept our cameras and video camera out of sight but we were able to sit back and enjoy the state's best matchup in strictly an analysis mode on Friday night.

The Byrnes Rebels made the ride down I-85 to Gaffney's new Reservation to try and knock a couple of monkeys off their back. First off the Indians are the only team to defeat the Rebels in the past 3 years and the Rebels had lost their last 3 games at Gaffney in the series. Coming in with the #1 ranking in the nation (USA Today) and a steady rain the Indians liked their chances to come out with a win.

The Indian fans felt the rains would help their efforts against the Rebels from Byrnes. One Indian supporter told us, "The Byrnes gang just isn't the same in the rain because they throw the ball a lot. With it raining and a brand new stadium and our fans I think we're gonna shock the state and the country tonight."

It didn't take long for the Rebels to make their statement taking ball on the kickoff and seeing Marcus Lattimore bolt 71 yards untouched for the game's first score. Gaffney's offensive line lead by NC State commit Denzelle Good didn't fare too well against Byrnes and their stunting on the defensive line. Standouts Corey Miller, Brandon Willis, and Danzel Collins were in the Gaffney backfield for most of the first half keeping the Indians standout QB/ATH Joe Craig bottled up for the most part.

Byrnes would see QB Chas Dodd score on a quarterback sneak for their second score to make it 13-0 as the extra point attempt failed. Dodd would then find WR Lee Weick from 14 yards out to push the margin to 20-0 in the first quarter. Gaffney was unable to deal with the Rebels defensive front as Byrnes defenders were making tackles for loss at a high rate in the first half. Going into halftime the score was 20-0.

The second half brought out a fired up Gaffney bunch. They played with assertiveness after a lengthy halftime meeting in the locker room. The Indians came out and marched down the field lead by the ultra quick Joe Craig who would score on a run from 12 yards out to bring some life back to the home crowd. The Rebels quickly answered with WR Nick Jones taking a short pass and racing past all of the Gaffney defenders down the sideline to score from 47 yards out.

The Indians however would respond on a 7 yard touchdown pass from Craig to WR Emison Hughes to make the score 27-14 in favor of the Rebels. Byrnes would go on to add another touchdown for Chas Dodd to WR Craig Weick and a tremendous 27 yard touchdown run by Marcus Lattimore to end the scoring as Lattimore capped it with a 2 point conversion to make the final score 42-14.

It was another huge night for Marcus Lattimore as he ran for 215 yards while scoring his 2 touchdowns but he also eclipsed the Byrnes school record for rushing yards in a career previously held by Mike Glenn. Glenn's mark was 2,835 yards and Lattimore stands now at 2,946 according to our stats. Lattimore continues to impress us each and every time out and will given 5-star status soon. As we've stated for over a year and a half he will more than likely be a frontrunner as the nation's #1 overall prospect in the 2010 class for Scout.com.

Stay tuned for some individual prospect analysis and notes from the game in another article. SCPrepNation.com is the #1 source for South Carolina high school football and basketball recruiting information and coverage!!!
